Taming the Blank Page: How to Start Creating from Nothing
What is creativity? While there are countless definitions, the two I love most are ‘the expression of self’ and ‘the creation of something from nothing.’ Its beauty lies in its lack of rules—there's no single formula. To be creative, you simply need to be yourself and begin.
Yet, that very act of beginning is often the greatest challenge. The blank page is one of the scariest things a creative can face. Whether it's a blank screen, an empty canvas, or the pristine page of a sketchbook, the effect is the same: a wave of doubt. We question what to create, how to start, and whether our ideas are good enough. If you’ve ever felt this, you are not alone.
I vividly remember my first adult drawing class. Our assignment seemed simple: draw a Coca-Cola bottle. “Easy,” I thought. But when I opened my sketchbook and faced that vast white space, I froze. I felt like a lost traveler without a map, agonizing over whether to start at the top, the bottom, or the center. I eventually managed a drawing, it wasn’t perfectly proportional, but it was mine. I was proud of it.
That experience taught me a crucial lesson: creativity requires stepping out of your comfort zone. It also sparked my curiosity about what it truly means to be creative. Through reading and research, I discovered a principle that reshaped my thinking: being a creative person means being a problem solver. The blank page wasn't a barrier; it was a puzzle to be solved.
So, how do we solve it?
I learned that a blank canvas doesn’t need to be blank, at least not figuratively. The key is to start small. In drawing, that might mean jotting down rough, messy shapes instead of a perfect outline. In writing, you don’t need the entire story, you can start with a single character, a snippet of dialogue, or a plot idea. The act of sketching or writing itself becomes a tool for clarification. You start to understand your idea by interacting with it. Begin with something small and simple, and before you know it, you’ve started creating. The blank page is no longer staring back at you; it’s collaborating with you.
Creativity is the engine that shapes our world. It’s in the clothes we wear, the homes we live in, the meals we enjoy, and the technology we use. It drives innovation, refines ideas, and molds the future. Its influence only grows stronger, which is why we so often hear that the future belongs to the creatives.
While confidence is important, finding joy in the process is what truly sustains creativity. Treat it as a form of play, a space where you have the freedom to explore, experiment, and let your imagination run wild. This excitement can propel you further than confidence alone ever could.
Now, I’d love to hear from you. How do you overcome the fear of the blank page? In what ways does creativity shape your life? Share your stories, tips, and experiences below. Let's keep the conversation going and inspire each other to create fearlessly.
