Embracing Fear and Growth

In November 2024, I encountered an unexpected challenge that reshaped my understanding of courage and collaboration. As a design student passionate about creating impactful solutions, the idea of attending a design thinking hackathon both intrigued and intimidated me. The fear of stepping into unfamiliar territory,  loomed over me like a storm cloud.

To make matters worse, I missed the deadline to apply as a volunteer—a role I felt safe and confident in. But on November 1st, a spark of determination broke through my hesitation. With no guarantee of success, I reached out and asked for a chance to participate. To my surprise and relief, my request was granted. Little did I know, this decision would set me on a transformative journey.

The first day of the hackathon arrived, and my nerves were in overdrive. As a volunteer, I was tasked with helping participants form their teams. Watching them pitch their ideas was both inspiring and intimidating, like being a spectator at the start of a thrilling race. Then, something inside me stirred—a quiet but persistent voice urging me to step out of the background and into the action.

Summoning every ounce of courage I could muster, I joined a team. At first, I hesitated, convinced I had nothing of value to contribute. But that notion was quickly proven wrong. What followed was an exhilarating whirlwind of brainstorming, prototyping, and refining ideas under tight deadlines. Our team faced moments of friction, creative blocks, and even outright disagreement, but the shared vision of bringing our idea to life fueled our perseverance.

To my astonishment, our team emerged as the first runners-up in the competition! I left the event with not one but two certificates—one for my role as a volunteer and another for our team’s achievement. We were even honored with gifts, tangible tokens of a leap of faith that paid off in ways I never imagined.

That experience taught me that courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s taking a step forward despite it. Collaboration, I learned, is not about having all the answers but about being open to learning and growing alongside others.

Lessons Learned

  1. Courage is a Catalyst for Growth

    • Stepping out of my comfort zone taught me that courage isn’t about the absence of fear but about acting despite it. It opened doors to opportunities and experiences I wouldn’t have encountered otherwise.
  2. You Have More to Offer Than You Think

    • My initial hesitation stemmed from the belief that I had little to contribute. Being part of a team and actively collaborating proved that everyone has unique value to add, even in ways they might not initially realize.
  3. Adaptability Leads to Success

    • Shifting roles from a volunteer to a participant showed me the importance of being adaptable. Embracing unexpected changes helped me thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  4. Ask for Opportunities

    • Even if you miss a deadline or feel unqualified, asking can open doors you never imagined. Don’t let missed chances stop you from trying.
  5. Learning Happens Everywhere

    • Beyond the technical aspects of design thinking, I learned soft skills like problem-solving, effective communication, and resilience—all crucial for personal and professional growth.
  6. Celebrate the Small Wins

    • Receiving certificates and gifts reminded me to acknowledge progress and achievements, no matter how small they seem. They serve as reminders of the journey and the effort it took to get there.
  7. Your Perspective Shapes Your Experience

    • Instead of letting fear dictate my decisions, I chose to see the hackathon as an opportunity to learn and grow. This mindset shift transformed what could have been a daunting experience into a memorable milestone.

This experience taught me that growth often lies on the other side of fear. By embracing the discomfort of the unknown, I not only honed my design skills but also grew as a person. For anyone hesitant to take that leap, remember: courage isn’t the absence of fear but the decision to move forward despite it.

Life is full of opportunities to learn and grow. Whether it’s attending a hackathon, starting a new project, or simply asking for a chance, every step you take matters. I hope my story inspires you to face your fears, embrace challenges, and trust in your ability to rise above them—because, truly, the rewards are beyond what you can imagine.
